Water festivals are a one-day water based science fair open to area 4th grade students. Presenters provide hands-on activities, displays and talks on a variety of water topics including aquatic insects, fisheries, the water cycle, water pollution, panning for gold, water safety, wetland plants and waterfowl.
Personnel from the Northeast Glacial Lakes Watershed Improvement and Protection Project participate in both the Big Sioux and Northern Prairie Water Festivals. The Big Sioux Water Festival is held in Brookings, South Dakota, in May, on the South Dakota State University campus.
